JUNE 27, 2006 – SALMON!

Time: 6:30pm
Air Temp: 45°F
Wind: South at 12mph
Weather: Overcast, light rain

We’ve been busy building the cabin on the Snake River, but today we’d had enough. It started raining pretty hard and since the rest of our work needs to be done from ladders, we chickened out today and went fishing instead (you can still do that in the rain!).

The Pink salmon are returning in full force, and just showing up in area rivers. The even year returns here are much larger than the odd years, and we are expecting around a million salmon in the Nome River alone!

Fish were rising everywhere, the river seemed to be boiling with pinks. We fished for only 45 minutes tonight and caught 15 between the three of us, kept a few for dinner. The fish were beautiful silver, still fresh from the ocean with sea lice clinging to their bodies. These tough fighters could not resist Dave’s special bright green Woolly Bugger. Steve’s fly that “never catches anything” also worked well (green with a gold beadhead). Just get it out there, let it sink, then a slow strip, let it sink, and repeat. The salmon hit on the sink most often, and we would feel them on the line on the next strip. With fishing this good it’s tough to stay on task, but we’ll give it a try again tomorrow!
