JUNE 21, 2006 – THE DROPPER
Time: 6:00pm
Air Temp: 44°F
Wind: Southwest at 6mph
Weather: Overcast
Dave, Steve and I went for a walk around the property here at the Snake
River site. We saw very few fish rising on this cool, overcast afternoon. We
headed to some well known pools and places that we had seen them before.
Dave tied up a double rigger with a caddis dry and a dropper. Within minutes
he had hooked into this beauty (it went for the dropper). I also had great
luck this afternoon with a single green Copper John. All hits were taken
well below the surface. As alwa ys, we pinch the barbs down on our hooks for
catch and release fishing. This makes the release much easier on the fish,
as well as the angler. We seem to have a very healthy population of Grayling
in this area, and we take great care to make sure that these fish are
returned unharmed. We fished for an hour or so and the fishing was a bit
slow, but always enjoyable. The Snake River here is an excellent place for
fly fishing with lightweight gear. The river is small, more like
a creek. Around every bend you can find a run of fast water,
then a pool. The river is easily wadeable with shallow crossings,
but the pools are often very
deep. There are many challenges here, generally involving precise casting to
avoid branches, and tricky line control in varying currents across the width
of the stream. During this early season all the fish we found in this
section of river were Grayling. The salmon have began to enter the rivers,
and should be up this far soon.
