JUNE 18, 2006 – FATHER'S DAY

Time: 3:00pm
Air Temp: 68°F
Wind: Southeast at 10mph
Weather: Clear

Happy Father’s Day to mine and all fathers out there today! We were able to spend the day together and with other friends preparing the site for our new cabin on the Snake River. It was another beautiful day on the Seward Peninsula. With several more of these, the snow on the peaks in the area might actually melt before July.

During a quick lunch break we were able to sneak in a little dry fly action for some hungry Grayling. We didn’t even bother putting on the waders; instead we were able to cast from the sandbar just downstream of the cabin site. We caught and released 4 Grayling. The largest landed was this one here at 19 and ¼ inches, who fell for the old Adams Irresistible. It was a beautiful clear day and we had to take advantage of the dry weather, so back to work we went. We were able to put in a good long day today on one of the longest days of the year. During this time, the sun sets at about 1:45am and rises again at about 4:15am local time, giving us a 22 hour day and 24 hours of visible light! Dry fly action can be great all night on these clear sunny days. In fact, fishing from about 9pm to 1am can be some of the most rewarding dry fly fishing. And though the temperature officially in Nome hit a high of 55°F, the high at our Snake River cabin just north of Nome and out of the effect of the sea breeze was 68°F.
