JUNE 9, 2006 – LATE NIGHT
Time: 11:30pm
Air Temp: 50°F
Wind: Calm
Weather: High Overcast, Light Rain
Well, Northland Services, the barge that I mentioned in the previous report,
arrived this morning, only 5 days late. It appears that they were able to
follow an icebreaker through the ice and into the port.
I worked late tonight but was still feeling like doing some fishing after
dinner. With a little light rain falling, I headed out to the Nome River
again to check out the action. The water was still clear, but with the
slightly warmer temperature today and the light rain falling I anticipated
that the water would be rising again soon. I found it tonight to still be
clear, and I slipped into my waders and raingear. I fished for about an hour
and a half, from 10pm to 11:30pm. I landed 12 Dolly Varden and lost several
more nibbles. I again kept one for dinner, and released the rest.
I fished using a small fry pattern again; the Black Nosed Dace. Basically it
looks like a pink salmon fry. I also landed one using Dave’s signature green
Woolly Bugger. The flies I was using would handle about five fish before
they were completely torn up. I cast directly across the current, then swam
the fly downstream and around without striping. The strikes would come on
the turn upstream. Very fast
action
tonight.
I had the barb pinched down on the hook and it worked really well.
One baby in the bunch turned out to be about 14 inches. The next smallest
was 17, and the largest of the evening measured in at 22 inches.
